Vietnam grows and exports various types of bananas, with three main types being the most economically significant:

1. Cavendish Banana

  • Characteristics: The Cavendish banana has large fruits with thick skins, firm texture, and a sweet, fragrant taste. This type is popular in European and Middle Eastern markets.
  • Export Volume: Approximately 600,000 tons per year.
  • Export Revenue: Around 150 million USD per year.
  • Main Markets: China, South Korea, the Middle East, and some European countries.

2. Laba Banana

  • Characteristics: Originating from Lam Dong, the Laba banana is known for its unique sweet and fragrant flavor, thin skin, soft texture, and lack of seeds.
  • Export Volume: Approximately 40,000 tons per year.
  • Export Revenue: Around 50 million USD per year.
  • Main Markets: Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.
  • Note: The Laba banana is highly valued for its quality and meets strict food safety standards, especially in the Japanese market.

3. Cau Banana

  • Characteristics: Cau bananas are small, have thin skins, and a mildly sweet taste, often consumed fresh or processed.
  • Export Volume: Approximately 50,000 tons per year.
  • Export Revenue: Around 30 million USD per year.
  • Main Markets: China, Taiwan, and other Southeast Asian countries.

Vietnam’s Banana Export Value:

Vietnam is one of the major banana producers in Southeast Asia, with exports primarily to China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and several European countries. In 2023, the total export volume of Vietnamese bananas reached around 690,000 tons, with an export revenue of approximately 310 million USD. The main export markets are China (accounting for over 60% of total value), Japan, and South Korea.
